Happy Halloween! Halloween is a holiday that our children enjoy at home and at school. We are reminding students of the strategies for safe Trick of Treating. We ask children to go out with an adult. We encourage them to wait until the adult approves candies prior to eating their treats. We also remind students to be respectful of people and property. Below is a link with other safety tips for parents as well.

From Counseling Department

Attention Seniors (Juniors are welcome too):

Many colleges and universities are scheduled to come visit us this fall.  Please look on Family Connection and sign up online for the sessions you'd like to attend.  Also, if there is a college you're interested in that isn't on the list, please let us know.  We can contact the school to see if they would be available for a visit.

Please note that counselors facilitate a variety of support groups throughout the year from how to deal with anxiety to bereavement (loss of a family member), social groups (to develop healthy friendships), and Changing Families for students whose parents are divorced. Though we reach out to students individually to invite them to participate in groups, we count on you to let us know if your child might benefit from this service. Please call your counselor for more information or if you would like your student to join a group.

Mercy College will be returning to NSHS on Tues., Nov. 7th, for students considering this school. They will  help students complete their applications and the fee to apply will be waived. Please also remember to check Family Connections under the college tab to see upcoming college rep visits.

Finally, please remember to check our counseling department web page for most recent events and information.

Typing Pal for grades 3-5: In the next week or so, students in grades 3-5 will be bringing home information on a school typing program that can be used at home. As our world shifts to a more paperless society, the need to learn good keyboarding skills is imperative. Not only are knowledge acquisition and communication reliant on keyboarding skills, but in school even assessment is becoming more and more computer-based. Therefore, we are asking for your assistance in teaching our children this important skill.

We have been using Typing Pal online typing program to teach our students to become proficient with their keyboarding skills. Typing Pal can be accessed from any device through the internet. All students have their own log-on (which will be included in the letter) so they can practice anywhere! We will be designating time in the classroom to keyboarding, but to become truly proficient, we are asking that students continue practicing at home on a regular basis. Ideally, we would suggest 15 minutes, three times per week at home until they reach proficiency. Thank you for your support.

PTO and the Harvest Festival: The Harvest Festival is coming up on October 14th! Please watch for information from the PTO. This is their biggest fundraiser of the year to support the many wonderful things we do for students, teachers and families!

Supporting Students following Las Vegas: High profile acts of violence like the one in Las Vegas can confuse students or frighten them. We have attached a resource for parents and teachers on how to talk to children about violence so we can help them feel safe. At PQ, we will not be discussing the most recent event in Las Vegas but want you to know that we are here to help if you need support. Dr. Merriman and Mr. Latterner are always available as are Dr. Bell and myself.

IMPORTANT UPDATE regarding FamilyID: In an effort to get rid of paper, we are using the tool the MSHS uses to sign off on policies that require your signature each year. Please click here for the directions to sign up for this service and sign off on these policies. PLEASE COMPLETE THIS BY FRIDAY OCTOBER 13th!

PTO and MySchoolAnywhere: Be sure to sign up for the PTO and the school directory using www.myschoolanywhere.com.

Shelter Drill: The State of New York mandates a particular day each year for schools to practice the shelter-in-place drill. This drill helps teachers and students know what to do and where to go in weather-related emergencies like hurricanes or tornadoes. We will be practicing this drill on Friday, October 6th. This would be an excellent opportunity for families to also talk about where they would go in your home if such an emergency occurred. It is always good to have a plan that everyone in the family is aware of!

Afterschool Enrichment Activities: It is imperative that you send a note each week to the teacher about staying after-school for any activity. This is for the safety of your child.

Yahoo Email accounts: It has come to our attention that people with yahoo email addresses are having difficulty sending emails to the district. You may be getting an error message that your email was not delivered sometimes well after the fact. We have researched this problem to see if the problem is on our end. However, the issue seems to be with yahoo. You might want to consider a different email address with a different extension. If you choose to change your email address, please be sure to let Jean Jerussi update your information.
