Dear MS Families,

In our ongoing effort to infuse character education and increase empathy among our students we have the pleasure of bringing back Dr. Michael Fowlin for an assembly with our middle school students. Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, is an actor with a doctorate in clinical psychology.  He will be returning to North Salem Middle School on January 23rd to perform his one man show, "You Don't Know Me Until You Know Me."

In this powerful show, he will encourage students to understand, "We are all capable of transforming the world, for the good, but this work must start from within; it is the process of turning our hurt into self-reflection, healing and then action." Though his show addresses serious topics ranging from bullying, to suicidal thoughts, to personal authenticity, these topics are addressed in a sensitive and uplifting way. Students will go into the show with knowledge of the topics that will be addressed. They will also participate in a follow-up advisory to debrief and address the lessons learned.

I have heard from both former students and educators that he is truly outstanding, and I look forward to his presentation and hopefully the positive lasting impressions it will have on our students.

Dear PQ Families:
Happy New Year!

Indoor and Outdoor Recess: Winter hit us with a vengeance over the holiday break. While we will make every effort to get our students out for fresh air every day, we are planning some indoor activities that that will provide some movement activities. We have purchased Imagination Playground blocks that will allow children to create and build structures using these large blocks. We are finding creative ways to get students into the MPR or gym during these prolonged cold snaps.
As for outdoor recess some parents have asked about the temperature in which we would send children outside. We consult a weather watch chart that helps us determine if it is safe for children to go outside. Twenty degrees without wind advisories is safe for students as long as they are dressed properly. On these cold days, we may take them out for an abbreviated recess in order that they get some fresh air and run around. It is truly important that we help our children make good decisions about clothing for school and recess at this time of year. Please assume we will go out every day. Students MUST have boots to go in the snow and snowpants if they intend to roll/play in the snow. Hats, gloves and scarves are important to have on these cold days. SHORTS without compression pants are no longer allowed at school during these cold months. Thank you for helping your children make good decisions based on weather conditions.

Seniors - Please note that, once documents are sent to your colleges, it may take several weeks for the college to process your materials. As a result, when you check your Application Status Page, your checklist may indicate that your application is incomplete. This is fine - simply continue to check your page regularly until all materials are received and processed. If any materials are still outstanding after your application has been processed, the colleges will notify you (via email).
