Dear PQ Families:

State Testing: We will be administering the NYS ELA and Math Assessments for Grades 3-5 on April 14-16 and 22-24. Please avoid scheduling appointments during the testing period. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Kindergarten report cards are going home tomorrow.

After School Enrichment registration is right around the corner. Please look over the class schedule documents or look at the Online Registration website to see the exciting programs that are being offered for the Spring 2015 semester. Anyone that would like more information about the After School Enrichment program please contact a committee member: Jen Armbruster (Online Registration), Jenn Gameiro (Accounting), Karen Onofrio (Instructor Liaison) or Nicole Smushko (PQ Liaison).

Safety is of utmost importance particularly at the end of the day when we are dismissing students. Please make after-school arrangements with your child before he or she leaves for school. It is very difficult to accommodate the many phone calls we receive on a daily basis to change transportation arrangements and mistakes can happen. It also interrupts classroom instruction to get messages to children. Please make all transportation arrangements for your child in advance of his/her arrival at school. Be sure to provide a note WITH your child of those arrangements.

MHAT: The Mental Health Advisory Team presents Dr. John Walkup to talk about signs and symptoms of anxiety in children and adults and coping strategies to deal with anxiety. The presentation will be on Tuesday February 3, 2015 from 6:30-8:00 PM in the Middle School Cafeteria. Please RSVP toMHAT@northsalemschools.org.

Dear PQ Families:

I am glad to be back at school this morning! Hope you have all been safe and warm!

Fifth Grade Collaborative and Creative Project funded by the North Salem Foundation for Learning: PQ would like to welcome Kevin Briody, a two-time Emmy award-winner and internationally recognized singer and songwriter who has shared the stage with talented artists ranging from Art Garfunkel to Aimee Mann. From 2000-2002, Kevin served as the Official Connecticut State Troubadour and has been selected by the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism as a Master Teaching Artist. He teaches songwriting workshops to aspiring songwriters of all ages.

For this project funded by the North Salem Foundation for Learning, Kevin will work with the entire 5th grade and write the lyrics to a song on a topic meaningful to the students and supports the school’s efforts to promote kindness, tolerance, and community. After the song is completed, the children will have the opportunity to record the song as well as perform the song at their Moving Up Ceremony in June 2015. Kevin Briody will begin working with our 5th graders on Wednesday of this week. We are looking forward to this creative and collaborative endeavor with him!

Transitioning from CPSE to CSE: Going to Kindergarten: Please see the attached flyer regarding an opportunity for parents of pre-schoolers with special needs to learn about transitioning to kindergarten. Many thanks to SEPTO for sponsoring this workshop.

Upcoming PTO Events: Be sure to watch for the PTO flyers for the Bowl-a-Rama and Sweetheart Ball. Those fun events are coming up quickly.

Weather and Recess: While the weather is unpredictable, it is my goal to get students outside as often as possible. In order to go in the snow, children must have boots or they will have to remain on the blacktop. It is important children are dressed appropriately to go outside each day with a warm coat, gloves/mittens and a hat. The wind on the playground can make it colder than it may seem. Please help us by making sure your children have the necessary clothing for recess.

Coffee with the Principal: The next Coffee with the Principal is Tuesday, January 20th at 9:00 am in the Multi-purpose Room.

Have a great week!
Kindly,
Mrs. Johnson

Dear PQ Families:

I hope you all had a wonderful vacation and a happy new year!

Be Kind - The theme this month is "Courage to be Kind." We will be talking about how sometimes it is hard to be kind. Classrooms will be using stories and real-life incidents as opportunities to learn about kindness. We will also talk about what it means to assume someone has good intentions. There are times when others may hurt us physically or emotionally without intending to. Some leading questions to discuss might include: Did my classmate purposefully knock my books out of my hand as he rushed to class to make me feel angry? Did my friend ignore me just to make me feel sad? These same situations can occur among siblings. We will pay special attention to how we might react initially without considering the other person’s intent, and then thinking about how our responses might change if we assume the other person has good intentions.

Transitioning from CPSE to CSE: Going to Kindergarten: Please see the attached flyer regarding an opportunity for parents of pre-schoolers with special needs to learn about transitioning to kindergarten. Many thanks to SEPTO for sponsoring this workshop.

PTO Meeting and Upcoming Events: The next PTO meeting is January 13th at 9:00 am. I will be speaking about our State testing results and our LAP plan. Be sure to watch for the PTO flyers for the Bowl-a-Rama and Sweetheart Ball. Those fun events are coming up quickly.

Chorus: The Thursday Chorus starts on the 8th and the Wednesday group starts on the 14th of this month.
NS Recreation Skiing and Snowboarding WILL NOT be starting their lessons/program this week. They will start next week on 1/14. Thank you!

Have a great week!
