Dear PQ Families:

Hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weekend! Gorgeous weather to enjoy the beginning of fall!

Recess Enhancements at PQ: There are two new recess activities at PQ.
1. On the 3-5 playground, Girl Scout Troop 1054 painted a map of the United States. I want to thank them for their hard work and helping to add a fun activity at recess for students. It will be great to see our students know all of the states and capitals at PQ in the near future!
2. Gaga ball is another new game on both the K-2 and 3-5 playgrounds. Many thanks to the PTO for purchasing the structures and equipment for this fun game! Thank you to the dads who put them together so they were ready for recess yesterday!

Our next PTO Meeting is Tuesday, October 7 at 9:00 am. All are welcome to attend. Chris Latterner, our school social worker, will be speaking about collaborative problem solving, a process to help children solve problems by working with them to build on strengths to use when future issues arise.

Every FRIDAY is SPIRIT DAY! Be sure and wear your PQ spirit wear on Friday!

After-school Activities begin next week! Please make sure students have notes for their teachers in order to stay after school. A reminder about SECURITY: Parents should wait outside the building for their children. Teachers will bring students to the front of the building to be picked up. Thank you for your cooperation.

Have a great week.
Respectfully,

Mary Johnson

The cub scout committee meeting will be Wednesday at 7pm at the Firehouse and Thursday at 7pm is our October pack night at PQ in the cafeteria.

Dear PQ Parents:

Many thanks to the PTO for a wonderful Saturday afternoon at the Harvest Fest. It was so nice to see so many families playing, laughing, and talking together. I would also like to thank the MSHS for including PQ in the Homecoming events! The fireworks were spectacular. It was a wonderful weekend for the North Salem Community.

Dear PQ Parents:

Curriculum Nights: Please see the attached invitations for the Curriculum Night for Grades 2 and 3 on Wednesday, September 17th as well as the Grade 4 and 5 Curriculum Night on Monday, September 22nd. Our 4th Grade Band meeting will also be held on September 22nd at 7:00 pm.

Security: The North Salem School District Safety Committee continues to monitor and improve security measures to keep our schools safe. This summer new door locks were installed making the schools secure 24/7. This increased security requires us to rethink how parents will pick up students for afterschool activities, extra help, Girl/Boy Scouts, etc. Effective immediately, teachers and instructors will bring their students to the front door for pickup. Parents will remain outside until the activity is finished.
I know this may be a slight inconvenience. However, the security of our buildings for the safety of our students is a priority. Thank you for cooperation in advançe.

PTO Harvest Festival and Homecoming Festivities: Be sure to come to our PTO Harvest Festival THIS SATURDAY from 12-3! This is such a fun family event. In addition, PQ families are welcome to attend the Homecoming festivities at the MSHS - the most spectacular being the fireworks on Friday at 8:30 behind the high school!

Have a great week!
Mrs. Johnson

Welcome to Homecoming 2014, Friday, September 19 and Saturday September 20

Please plan to celebrate the opening of another great school year by participating in Homecoming 2014.

The festivities begin at 5 pm with the high school Dodgeball Tournament, followed by the Athletic Pep Rally at 7:30.  The annual induction to the North Salem Athletic Hall of Fame will also be a very special part of the evening.  We will light the North Salem sky with FIREWORKS in the rear of the high school at 8:30 pm.  Bring your blanket or lawn chair to watch the show.  Join us for supper with Barbeque Bob where will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled pork and macaroni and cheese and participate in our annual Chili Contest.

The excitement of athletic contests will fill the day on Saturday, September 20.

The Dodgeball Tournament is a high school event although Middle School students are invited to watch the games.  (Admission $2).  There are no other activities specifically for middle school students.  Parents please note that students cannot remain after school until the start of the events at 5 pm; there is no supervision and no activities available.  Students must take the 2:10 pm bus home on Friday.  Students are invited to return to school to join the fun at 5 pm on September 19 and again on September 20.

Thanks to the generosity of our PQ and Middle/High School PTOs, our Athletic Booster Club, local corporate sponsors, teachers, parents, and community organizations and community members, our FIREWORKS celebration is becoming an annual tradition.  Please help to keep the tradition alive by considering a donation to Homecoming Fireworks 2015!

North Salem Middle School and High School Families -- To help make this year's Homecoming a successful event for our kids, your help is needed.  Each grade level family is requested to donate the following:

6th and 7th grades -- Arizona, Nestea or Snapple Iced Tea (no glass bottles please)
8th and 9th grades -- Sports Drinks
10th, 11th and 12th grades -- Single size chips or snack bags

Just a reminder that families with multiple children need only make one donation -- thanks for your support!!

Dear PQ Families:

What a wonderful start to the new school year! The children are already back into our routines and are ready to learn. It has been wonderful to see so many smiling faces each morning as the children come off the bus!

Thank you to the PTO for a wonderful opening meeting. I encourage all parents to participate in the many, varied activities sponsored by the PTO. I know it is going to be a great year!

We are excited about one of our NEW initiatives this year. We are a KIND SCHOOL and are participating in the Ben’s Bells Kind Campus Program, an innovative outreach program for school that serves to educate and inspire students, staff and faculty to recognize the importance of intentional kindness. Behavioral science research confirms that being kind toward others has powerful effects on individuals’ mental health and quality of life. Please see the attached letter with additional information about the program and how your family can continue practicing kindness at home.

Attention all Kindergarten families and New Families to PQ – The PTO is having a welcome to PQ Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, September 9th at 5:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. Be sure to see the attached flyer to RSVP.

The PQ Harvest Festival and NS Homecoming are the same weekend! Be sure to check out the information about the fireworks on Friday, September 19th and the PTO Harvest Festival on the 20th! These are great family events. Be sure to make plans to attend!

Just a few Reminders:

• Lunch Money: It is imperative that parents use our online payment system for our lunch program. Use the link below to sign up for this service. It allows you to see what your child is purchasing for lunch each day including snacks. You can add money to the account at any time or you can send a check into school and the food service staff will add it to your account.

• General Notes - In order to maintain a safe environment, a note written by a parent or guardian must be brought to school each day if the student will not be riding their scheduled bus home. Please make these arrangements the night before so the children know what they are doing and have the note necessary to make that happen.

• Permanent Notes for Parent Pick-up - A PERMANENT PICKUP for Parent Pick-up note will be honored provided the parent/guardian has provided a written note to create this arrangement. Please see the attached form that must be completed in order for us to create a permanent pick-up tag for your child’s background.
• Picture Day - Just a reminder - Picture Day is Tuesday, September 16th. Please make sure you send in the order form by Tuesday.

• K and 1 Curriculum Nights - Our Kindergarten and First Grade Curriculum Night will be on Thursday, September 11th. From 6:30 to 6:45, Mrs. Johnson will greet First Grade Parents and share goals for the year. At 6:45, First grade parents will hear from their child's teacher all the learning that will go on this year. Mrs. Johnson will greet Kindergarten parents from 7:30 to 7:45 and then the Kindergarten teachers will review curriculum and goals for the year. Babysitting is provided by the Girl Scouts for $3.00/child in the cafeteria.

• After School Enrichment Registration - Registration for After School Activities will be online this year beginning Saturday, Sept. 13 through Sunday Sept. 21st.

Respectfully,
Mrs. Johnson

Dear PQ Families: I am so looking forward to our first day of school! The smiles are the best on this day and we are here to help those who might not be quite ready! It is going to be a great year!

PQ Family Open House is TOMORROW - Wednesday, September 3rd from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Be sure to bring your school supplies when you come to visit! The front doors will open at 3:00 pm.

Please remember to place a name tag on kindergarten, first and second grade students during the first two weeks of school. It is most helpful when approaching a lost child to call them by their name and know their teacher and bus number. Thank you for the help.

Dismissal Procedures for 14-15 School Year: It is imperative for students to arrive at school with notes about their after school transportation needs. In order that children do not miss instructional time or worry about what they are doing after school, PLEASE send your child into school WITH a note stating what they are doing after school.

Parent Pick-Up will be in the gym at the end of each day beginning at 2:55 pm. Parents should enter the gym directly from the door in the parking lot. All children going to Parent Pick-Up MUST have a note indicating who will be picking up the child.

A PERMANENT PICKUP note will be honored when the parent/guardian has provided a written note to create this arrangement. Please indicate exactly what days the child will be picked up on a permanent basis and who the adult(s) is who will be picking up. Children will receive a color-coded tag for their backpacks as to which day(s) they are permanent pick-ups. Thus, a parent may arrange for their child to be picked-up for all 5 school days, or any combination of days, provided this has been indicated in advance.

See you tomorrow!
Mrs. Johnson
