The varsity boys and girls cross-country teams made an impressive impact at the Sept. 30 Six Flags Invitational in Jackson, New Jersey.

“Four of the boys ran their way to personal bests,” said coach Dr. Nicholas Kowgios. “It was an exceptional performance at a very competitive event. The entire team – boys and girls – have been working very hard, and the successes of both teams are the byproduct of those efforts.”

The boys team was led by Ben Leicht, who placed fourth with a time of 16:23 in the 5K race. His impressive finish is the fourth-fastest time posted this season thus far in Section I for all divisions and the 25th fastest time in the state. His run earned him a selection to the All-Six-Flags team for his sixth-place overall finish among more than 500 competitors.

All five members of the girls team also earned personal bests at the race, with Juliette Intrieri leading the way with a 14th -place overall finish at 21:30. Ava Jolley also earned a first-place finish among the 65 competitors in the freshman girls race.

Dr. Kowgios credited the student-athlete leaders for the strong showing.

“The team leaders have created a unique dynamic where every runner works hard every day,” he said. “Coach [Chris] Gould and I are thrilled with the team’s progress – they are a great group of athletes and a pleasure to coach.”
