A Rainbow of Compliments

A Rainbow of Compliments

As the cold January winds blow outside, the purple Pequenakonck kindergarten hallway is filled with the warm, comfortable feeling of kindness as students embarked on their first ONE CUB project of the new year – A Rainbow of Compliments Snowball Tree. This project is part of the ONE CUB Kindness Initiative’s school-home connection.

To celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream, the book, “A Rainbow of Friends” by P.K. Hallinan, was shared with each class “to show that when we celebrate the uniqueness of others, our lives are enriched and the world is a better place for all.” The meaning of a compliment was discussed with the students as well as the school motto, “Be Kind.”  The students experienced how great both giving and receiving a compliment can make a person feel.

Each kindergartner was assigned a classmate and took home a colorful sheet of paper with two snowballs drawn on it. After writing two kind things about their friend, the students cut out the snowballs and returned them to school. Every snowball compliment was read aloud filling the classrooms with lots of smiles! PQ’s kindergarten paraprofessionals (Claudia Badia, Lisa Finer, Carole Galligan and Britt Togonon) created a tree of rainbow snowballs filled with heartwarming compliments from one kindergartner to another, with everyone included. A happy heart is an important thing to have!

The ONE CUB Kindness initiative is an ongoing program with an emphasis on empowering the kindergartners with the knowledge that they can make a difference in the world through acts of kindness.
