North Salem High School students were faced with a problem – a plane they were traveling on was forced to make an emergency crash landing in the ocean near a tiny island. The survivors made it to the beach, exhausted. When they awoke, they found a lot of debris from the plane had washed up on the beach as well, but only a few bottles of water were in this litter. It took only three hours to explore the small island; no fresh water was discovered. What should they do to survive?

Watch the below video to see how chemistry students used creative and critical thinking, collaboration and communication to solve this problem and survive.
