The 25 members of North Salem High School’s Model United Nations club debated real-world issues at the Yale Model UN Conference in New Haven, Connecticut from Jan. 21 to 24.

“[More than] 1,500 students from around the world attend the conference each year,” said club adviser Mrs. Jennifer Longobardi. “The kids get to interact and debate in mock United Nations committees to solve global problems by drafting and passing resolutions in the same way as the real delegates of the UN.”

The conference topics included trade of arms in Central and South America, combating human trafficking, establishing an international framework for disease crisis management and aid.

“Skills gained by the [students include] cooperation, diplomacy, critical and creative thinking,” said Mrs. Longobardi.
