Second-Graders Showcase Internal Inspiration

Pequenakonck Elementary School second-graders took a trip to the Katonah Museum of Art to tour the exhibit “Inside the Outside” as part of the grade’s art and literacy curriculum.

The exhibit featured work by five self-taught artists – James Castle, Thornton Dial, Nellie Mae Rowe, Bill Traylor and Willie Young. Each of these artists relied on internal inspiration in their creative journeys, as none had any formal artistic training.

PQ students enjoyed the enriching experience, which allowed them to not only view the artwork, but to also partake in evidence-based learning and group discussion afterward. Throughout the tour, the second-graders participated in a number of their own imaginative and constructive art activities that involved observation, problem-solving and storytelling.
